What is Trigger Finger?

Trigger finger is becoming all too common with increasing overuse of keyboard mouse clicking, texting (trigger thumb), etc.

Trigger finger is a painful condition involving the finger tendon and its tendon sheath in an affected digit, often the pointer, ring, middle finger or thumb which becomes “stuck” in a position.

The knuckle feels stiff and a hard nodule of fibrous tissue forms and can be felt on the palm.

What Causes Trigger Finger?

Tendon- The tendon is like a flexible cord in your finger. This cord attaches muscle to bone. Its function is to move the bone.

From overuse, the tendon becomes irritated, thickened and stiff. The sheath surrounding the tendon can also become irritated.

Tendon Sheath- The tendon sheath is like a sleeve surrounding and protecting the tendon. Inflammation of the sheath around the tendon becomes thickened and narrowed.

This blocks the normal smooth movement of the tendon through the sheath. This makes flexion and extension movements painful, stiff and increasingly difficult. “Trigger Finger” is treated with acupuncture near Oak Grove, MN.

Progression- This progresses to “triggering” or staying in a “stuck” closed fist position against the palm, in close proximity to the affected finger.

At first it may “trigger” for only a moment.

(This can be painful).

Left untreated, this progresses to the finger becoming permanently stuck (This can become even more painful)

…until you are forced to straighten your finger by prying it back into a straight position. The finger will suddenly “Pop” or “Click” up and out from a closed fist position. Ackerman Acupuncture treats trigger finger near Andover, MN.
